MySTEMI Foundation

MySTEMI Foundation was established in 2018 to help support heart attack patients and to ensure that they receive the best possible treatment. Providing access to the most up-to-date treatment will lead to a better quality of life to the patient. Cardiovascular diseases remains the main cause of death in Malaysia.

During the period 2013-2014, a group of doctors from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and Institut Jantung Negara  (IJN) established a network of transferring patients with a heart attack in a timely fashion from HKL to IJN and thus establishing the HISNET program. Through regular discussions, the team was able to produce better protocols and systems of care, hence leading to better patient outcomes. They presented their work at multiple academic meetings nationally and internationally. One of the visions was to  connect the public and university hospitals in the Klang Valley region in order to provide round the clock primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) service. Towards the end of 2015, a group of cardiologists and emergency physicians from the Klang Valley and Selangor gathered to identify gaps in service delivery for heart attack victims and hence agreed to form an alliance network scheme to increase accessibility to primary PCI for heart attack patients using the existing HISNET systems of care. The MySTEMI network was then set up to facilitate a patient's transfer between 5 hubs hospitals with cardiologists on standby to carry out the gold standard treatment for a heart attack which is primary PCI. The National Heart Association of Malaysia played a pivotal role in  making this effort come to fruition. We also had support from the College of Emergency Physicians. Through the years there has been a rapid growth in service coverage expanding down the southern corridor to Melaka from the Serdang hub with more people being able to receive this treatment.

This treatment comes with a hefty upfront cost, however if done in a timely fashion leads to reduced downstream cost for the patient, family and the country. The Ministry of Health of Malaysia has been the main bearer in financing the procedure to date.

Thus,  the MySTEMI Foundation was formed to generate extra funds to support more patients with heart attack to gain access to primary PCI. We hope to be a player, alongside the government through the Ministry of Health and various NGO’s in the funding of this service to the public.  Currently only about 17% of the public gets access to this form of treatment. Our goal is to increase this to more than 50% by 2025.
